As the musical chairs in India's middle-order in white-ball cricket continues, Kedar Jadhav is the latest to face the heat. TOI has learnt that the 34-year-old batsman's position in the team is under scrutiny.
The Indian team management has struggled to get the middle-order combination right for nearly three years now. There has been very little consistency in picking players but Jadhav has always been in the mix in this period. The selectors and team management are now in a fix to accommodate him in the squad.
"The problem the team management and the selectors are facing is that they want to ensure Jadhav gets enough opportunities to show his prowess. One can't ignore his bowling when the team is missing a true all-rounder," sources close to the team management told TOI.
There have been calls to bring in Mumbai Indians batsman Surya Kumar Yadav, who has been in good touch in the domestic season for Mumbai. Some close to the team management feel Ajinkya Rahane too should be given another go in the 50-over format.
Manish Pandey, who has been travelling with the team for some time, also needs to be given a fair chance. What the selectors need to decide is that if they want two separate combinations for T20 and One-day cricket. Jadhav has not played T20I cricket for India since October 2017.
Now that the team management has decided against playing Jadhav in the ongoing ODI series against Australia, it will be interesting to see if the selectors retain him when the pick the ODI team for the series in New Zealand in a few days' time.
With KL Rahul coming good along with fellow openers Shikhar Dhawan and Rohit Sharma, the team management feels they have solid reserves in the middle-order and if need be Rahul could don the wicketkeeping gloves ahead of Rishabh Pant.
